Etymology Not stated, uncertain. The specific epithet armata (masculine: armatus) is a Latin adjective meaning 'armed' or 'armoured'. It could refer to the presence of spines of similar thickness in both rami of the species, against notopodial spines being slenderer than the neuropodial ones, as in Fauveliopsis brevipoda Hartman, 1971, the species most similar to F. armata, according to Fauchald & Hancock (1981).
