Editor's comment The subgenus Herfriedia appears not to have been used subsequent to Holly (1935). It is ill-defined, based on epitokes, and probably can be disregarded. [details]
Etymology Holly does not explain the derivation of 'Herfriedia'. It is clearly based on the male German personal name of Herfried, so the genus is named after someone known to Holly. Holly has given it an feminine suffix, but this may be just for euphony or perhaps to agree with feminine Nereis. Similarly Audouinia is named for a male, but treated as feminine. [details]
Grammatical gender Feminine. As a subgenus the gender of the name has no effect on species names which agree with the full genus, but if raised in rank to a full genus Herfriedia would be feminine, as is the genus Nereis. The Code treats -a endings as feminine. [details]
