Etymology The specific epithet fusiformis probably refers to the body shape of the species, being the Latin word for 'spindle-shaped'. [details]
Taxonomy The species was considered as a possible synonym of Syllis variegata Grube, 1860 by Augener (1913: 190-192; 1922: 23-24) and Haswell (1920: 91), and as a synonym of the same species by Day & Hutchings (1979: 104) and Licher (1999: 106), while Fauvel (1917: 193-194) considered it as a synonym of Syllis hyalina Grube, 1863. Type material Type material of Thoe fusiformis Kinberg, 1866 was missing, probably lost, when Augener studied the types of the Australian species described by Kinberg and deposited at the Swedish State Museum, in 1922. [details]
