Etymology The specific epithet variegata is the feminine of the Latin adjective variegato, meaning 'variegated', 'very colourful', 'streaked', spotted, or otherwise marked with a variety of color', and presumably refers to the coloration of the single specimen observed ("Die Haut wird überall von eingestreutem Pigmente braun gefärbt. Sowohl dieser braune wie der gelbe den Fühlern und Aftercirren zukommende Farbstoff sitzt in 0.028 Mm. breiten Zellen [...] mit 0,008 — 0,009 Mm. breiten Kernen, und zwar zu einem einzigen, 0,005 — 0,006 Mm. dicken Tropfen in jeder Zelle"; Claparède, 1863: 58).
