Ostracoda name details
From editor or global species database
Type specimen This species is one of the many ostracod species poorly described and illustrated in the 19th Century, which was posteriorly recorded from many distant localities in the world oceans. Its identity is still uncertain, because no holotype nor lectotype nor neotype has been designated so far. Several authors have identified trachyleberidid spiny valves as Cythere melobesioides, also with distinct generic assignments (e.g., Apatihowella, Echinocythereis, Henryhowella). However a definitive generic assignment for this species must await a lectotype or neotype designation. The name Apatihowella (Apatihowella) melobesioides (Brady, 1869) was mentioned - but not justified - by Coimbra & Bergue (2006); Bergue et al., 2006. Coimbra & Bergue (2008), while discussing that combination, stated it was first proposed by Jellinek & Swanson (2003). However, the latter work did not discuss Cythere melobesioides; instead, they proposed the open name Apatihowella (Apatihowella) sp. for Henryhowella melobesioides (Brady, 1869) sensu Dingle & Lord (1990), assuming, like other authors (Mazzini, 2005), that this species was not the same as Cythere melobesioides Brady, 1869. Because these are not the same species (and because of the lack of type specimen designation), it is not possible to consider Apatihowella (Apatihowella) melobesioides a valid new combination for Cythere melobesioides.
