The Catalogue of Life (CoL) has the ambitious objective to list all species that occur worldwide, on land and at sea. There was already a contribution to this initiative from the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), but recently Leen Vandepitte and Wim Decock– both working in the VLIZ data centre for the WoRMS data management team – became member of the ' CoL Global Team ' and the ' CoL Editorial Board’, repsectively. As a user or developer you can now use the Marine Gazetteer webservices to feed your own application with the Marine Gazetteer standardized list of georeferenced marine place names and marine areas. Currently, we support both Restful and SOAP methods for accessing the services.

To provide sufficient expert knowledge for maintaining the database, we have now (2013) formed an editorial team to whom the queries on particular Amphipoda taxa should be addressed. The total number of Amphipoda editors is now 30, each with their own area of expertise.

New data manager for WoRMS: Leen Vandepitte

The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) has appointed Leen Vandepitte as the new data manager for WoRMS.
Leen is a biologist with a lot of experience in biological data management. In the VLIZ data centre, she is also responsable for the management of EurOBIS. Wim Decock (biologist) and Bart Vanhoorne (IT specialist) will of course continue to serve in the data management team for WoRMS.

World List of Lophogastrida, Stygiomysida and Mysida launched ('Mysidacea')

The peracarid crustacean orders Mysida, Lophogastrida and Stygiomysida were formerly grouped under the name "Mysidacea". Although the treatment in three separate orders is now accepted, we have chosen to present mysids, lophogastrids and stygiomysids in the same web interface. The higher classification (orders, families, subfamilies) follows Meland & Willassen (2007), and the fossil order of Pygocephalomorpha is also included in the database.
