Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary or clustered in small, irregular colonies (up to 200 μm in diameter), ± irregularly screw-like coiled, with 0.5-9 (12) coils; coils 25-58 μm wide, 7-32 μm high, constricted at the cross-walls, with wide, colourless, diffluent mucilaginous envelopes. Cells ± spherical or widely barrel-shaped, grey-blue to yellow-green, usually with aerotopes, (4) 6-9 (11) x (4.8) 5-8.5 (9.4-?11.4) μm. Heterocytes ± spherical, rarely widely oval, 5-11 x 5-10.3 μm. Akine¬tes solitary or in pairs (rarely in rows?), widely ellipsoidal, with colourless exo¬spore, 10-19 (22) x 8-14 (19) μm. — Variable species; numerous subspecific taxa were described, which probably belong to the variation limits of this species (f. rossica Aptekar' in Elenkin 1938, f. africana Taylor in Elenkin 1938, f. kisseleviana Elenkin 1938, f. philippinensis Taylor in Elenkin 1938), or represent possibly a separate taxon (var. recta Roll 1928). [details]

Distribution In plankton of freshwater ponds and lakes; recorded from E Africa, Argentina, central Asia, China, Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Philippines, Romania, S Russia, Turkmenia, Ukraine, USA (Lake Erie). [details]

Remark Heterocysts, nitrogen fixing filamentous form [details]
