Original description With a gelatinous layer, light-rusty, free-floating or clinging to plants. The filaments are generally straight, parallel or subparallel. Cells are subquadrate or subcylindrical; 3-4 µm wide and 3-5 µm long. Apical cells are rounded. Gas vacuoles (aerotopes) not filled. Heterocysts are subglobose, oblong or subcylindrical; mostly subcylindrical cells, hyaline, 5 µm wide and 6 - 8 µm long. Akinetes are subcylindrical, 5 µm wide and 27 µm long, adjacent to the heterocysts at both sides, sometimes 2 to 4 in series. Akinete cell wall is hyaline. It diferes from other Anabaena in the form of the heterocysts. (Lemmermann E. 1896) [details]
