Type species Mitchell et al. (2020, p. 3): "The subgenus Coleiconus was established by Hottinger and Drobne(1980) as a subgenus of the genus Coskinolina with Coskinolina elongata Cole 1942 designated as the type and only species. Hottinger and Drobne (1980) based their description of Coleiconus on material from Jamaica that Cole (1956) had attributed to the Floridian species Coskinolina elongata Cole 1942. Loeblich and Tappan (1985, 1988) raised the rank of Coleiconus to genus level. Robinson (1993) considered that the early Eocene Coskinolina elongata from Florida was distinct from the middle Eocene material from Jamaica and established Coleiconus zansi Robinson 1993 for the Jamaican forms. In fact, he had reservations that Coskinolina elongata belonged to the genus Coleiconus, and placed it tentatively in the genus Fallotella, since it had an apically central proloculus, almost no juvenile spiral stage, and the apparent presence of occasional secondary radial partitions. Robinson (1993, p. 48) stated that “[The] type species ...[is] here regarded as Coeliconus zansi n. sp.” However, this is not a valid designation of type species according to the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999). According to ICZN Article 70.3 (see Mitchell, 2015, for the case with belemnite Belemnopsis Bayle) there are two possible actions: (1) select the type species as "the nominal species originally cited as type species" (article 70.3.1; i.e., Coskinolinoides elongata Cole 1942); or (2) "the taxonomic species actually involved in the misidentification"(article 70.3.2; i.e., Coleiconus zansiRobinson 1993). Since the generic description of Coleiconusis based on what was subsequently described as Coleiconus zansi Robinson 1993, we formally designate Coleiconus zansi Robinson 1993 as type species of Coleiconus Hottinger and Drobne 1980 through authority as provided by ICZN (1999) article 70.3.2."
