Specimens of the genus Guembelitria Cushman, 1993, have been reported from uppermost Albian to lower Danian and middle Eocene to upper Oligocene strata. A new species, Guembelitria sergipensis, is described and illustrated from upper Aptian to lowermost upper Albian strata of the Sergipe Basin in northeastern Brazil. The occurrence of Guembelitria in Sergipe identifies an earlier first appearance datum (in the late Aptian) of this genus, which possibly originated at low-latitudes, in the shallow epicontinental seas of the northern South Atlantic. This new species is tentatively placed within a phylogenetic lineage of Globuligerina-Conoglobigerina-Guembelitria.
