Filter feeding by Acartia cluusii was studied from high-speed motion pictures (250 frames.s-‘) of the copepods grazing in natural seawater and in suspensions of SkeZetonema costatum. Feeding was intermittent, with feeding bouts ranging in length from 90 to 1,000 ms in natural particle suspensions. During feeding, the mouthparts vibrated at about 60 Hz. Acartiu also used its thoracic legs in feeding to supplement the filtering action of the maxillae.
