The occurrence of L. salmonis on Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka, O. keta, O. gorbuscha, O. kisutch and O. tshawytscha) and steelhead/rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was studied in the northern Pacific Ocean in May and June 1982 and 1983. The parasite occurred on all 6 species of salmonids, but there were marked differences in prevalence and abundance among the species. O. tshawytscha was the most heavily infested, followed by, in descending order, S. gairdneri, O. gorbuscha, O. keta, O. kisutch and O. keta. In terms of the size of parasite population, O. gorbuscha and O. keta were the most important hosts; about 90% of the total numbers of parasites occurred on these 2 species. In heavy infestations, the parasites were often found in clusters on the skin near the anal fin, and caused damage. The prevalence and abundance of parasites increased with host size and time spent in the ocean.
