Etymology The species is named in honor of James Cook (b. Morton, Yorkshire, England, 7 November 1728 - d. Kealakekua Bay, Kingdom of Hawaii, 14 February 1779), British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain of the Royal Navy, who named Lizard Island and found an opening through the Great Barrier Reef to the Pacific Ocean, nowadays known as the Cook's Passage and located near Yonge Reef, the type locality of the species.
