Original description The author of this name remains debatable. Metcalf (1918: 88) in his reference of Milne-Edwards (1828) appears to cite a paper by Audoin and Milne Edwards on the fauna of the Îles Chausey in the Annales des Sciences vol. 15. However the name Salpa clostra is not found in this article, but there is a note saying that a large number of plates with invertebrates observed at the Îles Chausey were delivered to the Académie des Sciences Naturelles after Audoin and Milne Edwards completed their lecture. The summary of the lecture is printed in the Annales des Sciences Naturelles vol. 15 and the plates presumably containing images of Salpa clostra were apparently not published, certainly not in 1828. In Milne Edwards later work (1837) salps are being treated, including Salpa fusiformis (but not S. clostra), which appears to be the senior synonym. Yount (1954) also mentions Salpa clostra but gives Deshayes (1836-1849) as author and reference. The only proper treatment of this salp is that of Cuvier's Règne Animal vol. Mollusques Atlas Pl. 121 figs 2-4, edited by Deshayes with a small footnote in the accompanying text preceding the plate explaining that Milne Edwards found this species off Nice (French Mediterranean) in 1828 but his text and figures remained 'inédit' until Cuvier's volume edited by G.P. Deshayes was published in 1836-1849. To summarize: Milne Edwards is the collector and he also probably delivered the only images (of pl. 121). Deshayes cited Milne Edwards in the author-name combination Biphore clostra (Salpa clostra), so the author stays Milne Edwards, but the year has to be adjusted to 1849, more precisely it has to be Salpa clostra Milne Edwards in Cuvier, 1849. In Deshayes' text and in the figures it is clear that this salp is a junior synonym of Salpa fusiformis. [details]
