Spelling The treatment of a double i suffix in a species-group name is set out in Code articles 31.1, 32.5.1, and 33.4.
Since Claparède uses the agassizii spelling, as did most of his contemporaries, it can be assumed that he first Latinized the name “Agassiz” to Latin Agassizius, the stem then becoming Agassizi, and he added the genitive i to form agassizii, and so the spelling “agassizii” is therefore a correct original spelling, which must be retained. As a basic principle original spellings should not be altered unless there is an obvious lapsus within the article. Claparède's use of 'agassizii' was intentional and we should not alter it.
