Editor's comment Current taxon junior synonym of species listed. Senior primary homonym of Siphonostoma affine Haswell, 1886. See also Pherusa affinis (Leidy, 1855). Although Leidy first used the genus spelling Siphonostomum, that spelling is incorrect and unavailable. [details]Neotype USNM 8882, collected off Rhode Island about 400 km from the original type locality in New Jersey. No original type material of Leidy is known. [details]
Original description "46. SIPHONOSTOMUM AFFINE, Leidy. Body cylindro-fusiform, minutely papillated, with four rows of fasciculi of setae; those of the anterior three segments directed forward; those of the first segment one-third of an inch long; those of the third segment one line long. Length to three inches, by two lines broad, with 80 13egments. Obtained by Mr. Ashmead, from Beesley's Point, N. J." [details]
