Nomenclature The complicated nomenclatural history of this name has been dealt with by van Aartsen (1986). To summarize:
(1) G. B. Sowerby II (1839: 66) listed two different names: Monoptygma Lea, 1833, an available name based on an Eocene American fossil and currently placed in the family Nassariidae (Glibert, 1963), and Monotigma Gray, a hitherto unavailable name, made available therein by reference to his Figure 371 (with no species name)
(2) Gray (1847: 140) designated Monoptygma alabamiensis Lea, 1833 as type species of Monoptygma Lea, 1833 and (p. 159) associated the name Monotygma striata (note spelling variation) to Fig. 371 of G. B. Sowerby II (1839).
(3) A. Adams (1853) described a number of species explicitly but wrongly referred to Monoptygma Lea, 1833. These species are currently accepted under Monotygma G.B. Sowerby II, 1839. [details]
