Validity Hanitsch (1894: 203), discussing Bowerbank's Hymedesmia stellata (= Timea stellata) reported the occurrence in Liverpool Bay of an encrusting sponge 'very similar to H. stellata but possessing oxyasters instead of chiasters' for which he proposed the 'provisional' name H. acuto-stellata. He gave no further descriptive information, other than that 'its mode of growth reminds one strongly of Axinella stuposa' (presumably he meant what is currently known as Stelligera stuposa). Topsent (1900: 114) stated that he corresponded with Hanitsch and that they together arrived at the conclusion that Hanitsch specimen likely concerned an encrsting specimens of Stelligera, either stuposus or rigida. This information is not sufficient to distinguish Hanitsch' material from other Northeast Atlantic or nearby Mediterranean Timea species because many additional thin crusts with tylostyles and oxyasters were detected subsequently. The species is more likely conspecific with T. unistellata (Topsent, 1892), but it remains uncertain. [details]
