Authority The combination is used previous to Carter's publication by M. Sars, 1869: 250 as Cliona abyssorum nov. spec., but it is only a name in a list and thus a nomen nudum, an unavailable name, but the name combination may be subsequently used, then taking authorship of the new user (in this case Carter). It is unclear whether Sars' record and Carter's record are conspecific. Little (1968) proposed a new name for Carter's name (Cliona abyssalorum Little, 1968), but this is an objective junior synonym.
