Type species Type species Terebella zostericola Grube, 1860, by subsequent designation in Hartman (1959: 512), listed there as if authored by Örsted, 1844, but the valid date is not until 1860 as Örsted's name is a nomen nudum and he cannot be author of Grube's name. Day (1967: 735) refers to Terebella venustula Montagu, 1818 as being the type species, but this is not correct. Malmgren (1866) lists his own Nicolea arctica Malmgren first when creating the genus, but for reasons unknown most authors have usedTerebella zostericola as the type species (e.g.: Fauchald, 1977: 132; Holthe, 1986: 122; Nogueira 2008, Nogueira et al., 2015: 490). Nogueira (2008: 221) states the designation originates in the Hartman catalogue (1959), and he is assumed to have checked for earlier designations. [details]
