Remark A synonym of P. personatus Sladen, 1889, according to Downey (1973) and in Clark & Downey (1992) but retained as a valid species by Cherbonnier & Sibuet (1973), A.M. Clark in Gage et al.(1983), and Harvey et al (1988). Sladen described only 'three or four or more paxillar spines in the big holotype [R c. 70 mm or 55 mm according to Farran (1913)] of P. personatus (though noting in the center of the disc more spinelets may be present') whereas in one paxilla of a specimen from the Rockall Trough named P. reductus by A.M. Clark there were 10 larger and c.25 smaller spines. However, Sladen's estimate was probably made without removing the supradorsal membrane. All the specimens referred to P. reductus are small, R not more than 13 mm. Farran's specimen of personatus has R=44 mm. The holotype of P. personatus in the Dublin Museum needs reexamination.
