In autumn 1990 and spring 1992 two joint expeditions of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao, and the Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg, Frankfurt, were made to the tropical island of Hainan, South China Sea. During these expeditions more than 200 specimens of serpulid polychaetes were collected mainly by SCUBA-diving at the south and east coast of the island. From this material altogether 22 taxa of Serpulidae were identified. According to published records 10 taxa (45%) are recorded for the first time for Chinese waters. The highest diversity (15 taxa) was found on the reefs of Yezhu Island, Yalong Bay, at the southern tip of the island. Analysis of the distribution as given in the literature showed that most of the species occur in tropical to temperate waters and only very few are strictly tropical, thus reflecting the hydrography and geographic position of Hainan Island.
