An illustrated description is given, drawing on X-ray microanalysis and electron diffraction following transmission and scanning electron microscopy, of a single biflagellate cell from the Galapagos Islands. The periplast is shown to be strongly calcified and with a microcrystalline substructure based on calcium carbonate in the aragonite form instead of the more usual calcite. The highly characteristic small bowl-shaped calcified scales are without known parallel among existing coccoliths although the two equal flagella increase the probability that the organism belongs somewhere in or near this group.
