A new species of Porifera, Didiscus spinoxeatus (Ustica Island, Tyrrhenian Sea), is here described. The analysis of the spicular characters shows a close affinity of the new species with the Mediterranean D. styliferus Tsurnamal. Moreover, D. spinoxeatus shares some characters of its microscleres with D. verdensis Hiemstra & van Soest, recorded from Cape Verde Islands. The homogeneity of this Atlantic-Mediterranean group is discussed on the basis of the morphology of species-specific didiscorhabds.
