Editor's comment Hartman and Reish evidently differed on whether the local Nereis mediator Chamberlin was distinct from N. grubei (Kinberg), and thus should be the name of the Californian intertidal nereidid. Hartman never mentions N. grubei and continued to use N. mediator (in the Atlas, and the Catalogue), whereas Reish has continued with N. grubei. Remarkably, without comment, Hartman (1968) used Reish's figure of Californian Nereis grubei as the illustration of Nereis mediator in her Atlas! The synonymy perhaps awaits a re-examination, but use of N. grubei prevails. [details]Unreviewed
