Identification Although there is no material known to exist of this species, our colleague Sven Zea suggested that Callyspongia (Cladochalina) plicifera (Lamarck, 1814) is the most likely identity of this sponge. The name would have priority over Lamarck's name, but Vahl's name is a 'nomen oblitum' in the sense of the ICZN art.23.9. The name labyrinthiformis Vahl, 1793 has not been used after 1899 and the name plicifera has been used in the last 50 years in at least 25 works by 10 different authors over a span of at least 10 years. This meets the conditions for the status of a 'nomen protectum'. [details]
