Taxonomy Scott (1894) lists Acartia gaboonensis as a manuscript name which he attributes to himself, Th. Scott 1892, and places it in the synonymy of Acartia clausi. There is no published paper by Scott in 1892 that mentions this name. So - Acartia gaboonensis Scott, 1892 is a nomen nudum. This name was published by Scott, 1894, where it was listed as a synonym of A. clausi, with no additional discussion.
According to ICZN Article 11.6. A name which when first published in an available work was treated as a junior synonym of a name then used as valid is not thereby made available.
BUT
Article 11.6.1. However, if such a name published as a junior synonym had been treated before 1961 as an available name and either adopted as the name of a taxon or treated as a senior homonym, it is made available thereby but dates from its first publication as a synonym.
From the examples in the Code, one can conclude that Acartia gaboonensis Scott, 1894 was first published as a synonym BUT that Steuer (1923) treated it as an available name....as a variety.....and made it available. [details]
