Nomenclature There are two nomenclatorial errors in the species name: (1) the Latin spelling of succinum lacks the additional 'c', and...
Nomenclature There are two nomenclatorial errors in the species name: (1) the Latin spelling of succinum lacks the additional 'c', and (2) 'amber-colored' as indicated by the authors in the etymology would take as an adjective the gender of the genus name, becoming 'succinus' as the correct name. However, according to ICZN art. 32.5.1 incorrect Latinization is not in itself an inadvertent error demanding mandatory change, and if the authors intended to name the species as a noun, 'amber', the spelling as suc(c)inum would be correct. It is concluded here that despite the errors the name is accepted, and no change appears necessary. [details]
