Nomenclature Incertae sedis. The definition provided by Linnaeus, 1759 is: 'S. tubulosa simplex' and it belongs to the 'Tenaces', i.e. the 'firm' sponges (as opposed to the 'Fragiles'). The combination has not been repeated in Linnaeus, 1767, nor in Gmelin's 1791 list of Spongia species. Pallas (1766) referred to Linnaeus' name under his Spongia fistularis, with pre-Linnaean authors Sloane and Seba as additional references. If Pallas is right, then Linnaeus is the author of Aplysina fistularis. The name Spongia fistularis is adopted by Linnaeus, 1767 and Gmelin in Linnaeus, 1791, with reference to Pallas. There is not sufficient evidence for the assumption that Spongia fistulosa is conspecific with S. fistularis, and also changing the name from fistularis to fistulosa would be confusing. [details]
