Nomenclature The name appears as early as 1816 as vernacular "Lamellibranches", merely as a name in a classification scheme without any description or indication of its content. It is first given a description, still as vernacular "Lamellibranches", by Blainville (1822: 202) in a section "De la peau dans les Malacozoaires" of a treatise on comparative anatomy where he disusses at length (pp. 198-208) the classification of the molluscs. The name was first latinized as Lamellibranchiata, again accompanied by a description, in Blainville's (1824) entry on "Mollusques" in the Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles vol. 32, p. 306.
