Description Length: 22-25 cm. Plumage: brown above including neck; white below; white forehead continuing into white superciliary stripe; brown breast band broken in non-breading adult; breast band in breeding birds chestnut and face mask dark brown contrasting with paler crown (some females lack mask and have incomplete breast band). Immature like non-breeding adult, but with paler edges to dorsal feathers. Bare parts: iris dark brown; bill heavy and black; feet and legs grey or greenish grey, tinged pink or yellow and extend well beyond tail in flight. Habitat: tidal flats, salt pans and estuaries.
