Nomenclature Poléjaeff (1883) changed the name of Haeckel's (1872) 'family' Ascones to Homocoela. As the order level is not subject to the Principle of Priority, the name change is not illegal. Poléjaeff's name was reduced to the rank of family by Dendy & Row, 1913, but that name is unavailable (ICZN Art. 29.1) as there is no genus Homocoela. The family Homocoelidae was also used by Burton (1963). We will not separately make an entry of the family name Homocoelidae as it is not an available name and it is not clear of which family name it can be cited a synonym.
All three groups, 'Ascones' and 'Homocoela' and 'Homocoelidae', include members of both of the two modern classes Calcinea and Calcaronea as there was initially no distinction between Leucosolenia (Calcaronea) and Clathrina (Calcinea).
