Taxonomy Gray (1821) lists this as a beta form of Scypha papillaris, but cites Spongia compacta Sowerby, 1806 as original name. It is not explained why this deserves a new name, which is also misspelled. It is assumed that this is a form of Halichondria (Halichondria) panicea. [details]
