Nomenclature Here we cite Van Soest et al.'s (2020: 22-23) explanation for the nomen novum.
Removal of homonymy between Myxilla dendyi† Hinde & Holmes, 1892 and Myxilla dendyi Burton, 1959.
1. Myxilla dendyi† Hinde & Holmes, 1892: 202 (type locality Oligocene strata near Oamaru, Otago, New Zealand). Myxilla dendyi† Hinde & Holmes, 1892 is known only from isolated chelae spicules in the Lower Tertiary sediments from Otago, New Zealand. It is the senior primary homonym of Myxilla dendyi Burton, 1959 (ICZN Art. 57.2).
2. Myxilla dendyi Burton, 1959: 231 (type locality off North coast of Somalia, Gulf of Aden). Myxilla dendyi Burton, 1959 is a junior primary homonym of Myxilla dendyi† Hinde & Holmes, 1892 (the latter based solely on records of fossil spicules from the Tertiary sediments near Otago, New Zealand, and not synonymous with Burton’s (1959: 231) Recent species from the Gulf of Aden), for which a replacement name was required (ICZN Art. 59.1).
3. Summary: Myxilla dendyi† Hinde & Holmes, 1892 is maintained as the senior primary homonym of Myxilla dendyi Burton, 1959 (ICZN Art. 57.2). Myxilla dendyi Burton, 1959 is a junior primary homonym of Myxilla dendyi† Hinde & Holmes, 1892 and in the absence of synonyms required a new name (ICZN Art. 57.2, 59.1 & 60.3), for which Myxilla (Myxilla) burtoni nom. nov. was proposed, named after Maurice Burton.
