Distribution West Atlantic and Caribbean records of this species (e.g. by Van Soest, 1980) are considered misidentfied, because H. intestinalis and its synonyms occur only in the Indo-West Pacific. The West Atlantic records mostly concern H.cavernosa (Pallas, 1766). Reversely, Indo-West Pacific records of H. cavernosa mostly concern H. intestinalis, as H. cavernosa is confined to the West Atlantic. [details]
