A first compilation of qualitative results from an investigation in 1970 to 1973 on the polychete-fauna of soft-bottoms (from 10—230 m depths) in the Middle Adriatic area is presented. Only the area close to shore was excluded from the investigation. This study is based on approximatly 80 dredging-samples. The investigations were conducted from different types of boats and ships with a light surface-bottom-sled.
A list of all polychetes found so far is given. More than 220 species from 46 families are listed. Remarks as to the depth, the kind of sediments, and systematics are added. 31 species new to the Adriatic Sea are listed and the probability that more new species may be found is discussed.
In the discussion, problems of sampling and of the methods used are dealt with, as well as feeding types and problems of animal geography.
The lack of comparable investigations in the Mediterranean Sea and Adriatic Sea as opposed to North European shelf regions which have been extensively studied, is pointed out.
