M06041. Ed's submission receipt date = 11 July 06. Publication online 15 Nov 2006 (ie 4 months from submission) Submission abstract was: "The distinctive polynoid Paralepidonotus ampulliferus (Grube, 1878), known from the Indian Ocean, the western Pacific Ocean, and much of the Australian coast, is newly reported for New Zealand following its discovery at two northern North Island port harbours. Specimens were found in samples taken in 2003 and 2005 at several soft-shore locations in Waitemata Harbour (Auckland Harbour) and in nearby inlets, and a single specimen was found in a subtidal dredge sample taken in Whangarei Harbour in 2005. However, the species was absent in surveys undertaken earlier in those harbours and elsewhere, and the genus has no prior New Zealand records. Figures and a description are given to aid future identification. The evidence that P. ampulliferus is alien, newly arrived to local seas, and in the process of adventive naturalisation is discussed. Its presence in New Zealand is considered unlikely to have been achieved without human-mediated assistance."
