Etymology The generic name was stated to be composed of the Greek word Nama, meaning 'spring' or 'stream', and the name of the genus Lycastis Savigny, 1822, an unavailable name previously including some fresh-water nereid species now included under Namalycastis (Glasby, 1999: 28). Additionally the Lycastis part of the compound name appears to derive from the feminine Greek personal name Lykaste or Lycaste. [details]
Grammatical gender Not stated by Hartman (1959), but it is feminine as Lycastis is derived from a feminine personal name [details]
Nomenclature Hartman (1959) states Namalycastis is a 'new name' (rather than labelling it as a new genus), seemingly implying it is a replacement for Lycastis, but it is a new genus. As Hartman was aware, Chamberlin (1919) had (very briefly) proposed Namanereis for the "Lycastis" group of nereidids, with Lycastis quadraticeps Gay as the type. [details]
Type species The type species as named by Hartman was as "Paranereis abiuma" Müller in Grube, 1871, but this appears to be a misunderstanding of Grube's article, and she should have instead used tbe binomen Lycastis abiuma Grube, 1872. [details]
