Over 55 scientists from 17 countries met at the Flanders Marine Institute and planned the completion of a World Register of Marine Species by 2010, at a MarBEF workshop.
They agreed on a wide range of issues, including: governance and election of Steering Committee; IPR agreement through the Society for the Management of Electronic Biodiversity Data (www.smebd.eu); selection of new taxonomic editors; roles of editors and data managers; how the website should develop to aid editors and users; need to revise species pages to clarify what content was validated by whom; integration of global and regional species databases; and provide highly visible citations for users from the database to species page level; development of a standard classification of higher taxa; collaboration with related initiatives, including the Freshwater Animal Diversity Assessment (FADA), Species 2000, Catalogue of Life, Global Biodiversity Information Facility, Ocean Biogeographic Information System; how to quantify marine species diversity and raise the profile of taxonomic publications.
