In Europe the species is widely distributed in Great-Britain, the west coast of Europe, and on the coasts along the Mediterranean Sea. In Belgium, since 12 September 2002, the species is often found on pontoons in the harbour of Zeebrugge. The colonies appear to be transparent and gelatinous, with a diameter up to 15 cm.
