Classification The placement of Trochochaeta as a monogeneric family or as part of Spionidae is not yet resolved. Various works have expressed opinions. Those based on molecular data include Rouse et al (2022) where Trochochaeta (figure 58.1, page 243 in the chapter on Heterospio) is included in Spionidae, based on limited taxa sampling, and Bogantes et al.2024, where their phylogeny supports the monophyly of Spionidae without the inclusion of Trochochaetidae, also based on limited taxa sampling. Further work is necessary. If Trochochaeta belongs in Spionidae it would probably be most useful as a distinct subfamily, and it seems no proposals for this have yet been made. [details]
