Description Trichomes in free-swimming fascicles, ± straight, partly rope-like contorted, or radially-arranged ("star-like"), blue-green or brownish-green when dried, 7-16 µm wide, not constricted at the cross-walls, briefly attenuated at the ends. Cells up to 2× as long as wide, sometimes nearly isodiametric, 8-26 µm long. Apical cells rounded, rounded with thickened cell wall (narrow calyptra?), or slightly widened and rounded.

Environment Marine, planktic, bloom forming in tropical and subtropical oceans and seas: Europe: Mediterranean Sea (Italy: Gulf of Naples); outside Europe: Canary Islands, Guadeloupe, Hawaii Islands, Red Sea, SE coast of Africa, Caribbean Sea, all round the coasts of peninsular India, Sri Lanka, etc., and neighbouring islands. From Komárek and Anagnostidis 2005.
Planktonic all round the coast of peninsular India, Ceylon, etc., and neighbouring islands. This cyanobacteria has also been reported as occurring extensively in blooms in the West coast of India near Malabar and also near Krusadai etc., and have been found to cause fish mortality.
