Nomenclature The earlier name Ostrea capsa Fischer von Waldheim, 1807 has been put forward by Huber (2010: 607-608) as the valid name to be used for Ostrea stentina, a name which is in usage and for which the provisions of ICZN art. 23.9 may apply. Nevertheless Garzia et al. (2026) tentatively use this name to denote an Atlantic clade of small oysters which appears specifically distinct from Mediterranean Ostrea stentina, therefore remove it from the synonymy of the latter.
