Nomenclature Metopidia oxysternum Gosse, in Hudson & Gosse (1886, v.2., p.107) apparently is an inadvertent error (a lapsus calami). The reference to "Metopidia oxysternon Gosse, 1851 Ann. Nat. Hist., 2 Ser. vol. viii. 1851, p. 201" and use of the correct original spelling "oxysternon" in the caption for fig.8 and on pl. 25 is sufficient evidence that the intention was not to change the name. The specific name "oxysternum" is thus regarded as an incorrect subsequent spelling and as such is not an available name (ICZN, Art.19.1.). [details]
