Diagnosis Shell, viewed from the side, subquadrate, higher in front than behind; height equal to a little more than half the length. Anterior end broad and boldly rounded, and bearing a variable number of small fringed spines; posterior imperfectly rounded, its lower half slightly produced and bearing about six blunt marginal teeth; dorsal margin prominent over the anterior hinge, thence sloping gently backwards with a slight sinuosity, and rounded at its junction with the posterior end, ventral almost perfectly straight. Viewed from above, very broadly ovate, greatest width behind the middle, antiequal to two-thirds of the length, lateral margins boldly curved and forming a continuous sweep, with the anterior end broad; from the broadest part of the shell it converges abruptly backwards and terminates in a broad, truncated central prominence; margins everywhere irregular or crenate. Surface of the shell marked with a raised reticulate pattern (1), enclosing irregular polygonal excavations. (Brady, 1890) [details]
