Homonymy Polydora caeca of Webster, 1879 was a junior secondary homonym of Polydora coeca (Örsted, 1843) during the period when both were assigned to Polydora (the spellings are treated as the same by the ICZN 1999 Code rules). This is at least from 1893 (Mesnil's usage of Leucodorum coecum of Örsted as Polydora coeca) to 1996 (Blake's removal of Webster's species from genus Polydora. [details]

Homonymy Polydora caeca of Webster, 1879 was a junior secondary homonym of Polydora coeca (Örsted, 1843) during the period when both were assigned to Polydora (the spellings are treated as the same by the ICZN 1999 Code rules). This is at least from 1893 (Mesnil's usage of Leucodorum coecum of Örsted as Polydora coeca) to 1996 (Blake's removal of Webster's species from genus Polydora. [details]Spelling Blake (1996: 188) resurrects Dipolydora Verrill, 1879 (established for Polydora concharum Verrill), and includes Blake's new combination Dipolydora coeca (Örsted 1843) in a list of one subgroup of valid Dipolydora species, with comments that probably past identifications are 'confused' (misidentified) and that there is an 'alternate' (wrong) spelling as Dipolydora 'caeca'. However, the only spelling should be 'coeca'. Polydora caeca has often been used as the spelling for the Örsted species, and even disregarding the frequent mistaken spelling of Örsted's 'coeca' species, Polydora caeca of Webster is a junior secondary homonym during the period when both were assigned to Polydora, because the vowel pair 'oe' and 'ae' within a word are treated as the same spelling by the ICZN. They are obviously not the same but the point is that they are too confusable and the junior name in this situation must thus change. [details]
