Distribution Holotype collected off Koza, Wakayama, Japan, with paratype collected Off Sugashima, Japan (34°29′40"N, 136°54′58"E), 40 m depth, on Dendronephthya aff. tenera, and a lost specimen collected at Mun Island, Bay of Nathrang, Vietnam (12°9′47’’N, 109° 18′10’’E), at 15–20 m depth, on Dendronephthya sp. According to the authors "The species seems to be very rare, as we have been able to find four specimens in Japan, two only photographed and two collected and only one in Vietnam, collected but later lost , after checking hundreds of potential host octocorals. On the other hand, the prevalence of the infestation can be 1–2, as the two only photographed Japanese specimens shared the same host." [details]

Etymology authors: Cryptochaetosyllis "“imitatio” (mimicking in Latin) refers to the body shape and coloring of the species, which mimics sea slugs." Not stated but 'Imitatio' is assumed to be a noun in apposition. It is almost unique as a species epithet in WoRMS with the favoured words with the same meaning (a mimic) being imitator, imitatrix, imitata, imitatus, with the last two assumed to be adjectives. [details]
