Remark Duncan (1994) indicates that species of Makwe inhabit coastal or strand habitats. There is considerable generic level variation in the genus.
The posterior margin (merus, carpus and propodus) of male gnathopod 1 may have palmate lobes (M. insularis, M. maynei, M. parva) or no lobes (M. hurleyi, M. waihekensis). The outer ramus of uropod 1 may be setose (M. hurleyi, M. waihekensis) or not setose (M. insularis, M. maynei, M. parva). The telson may have 1 or 2 (M. hurleyi, M. waihekensis) apical robust seta per lobe or 3-5 apical and marginal setae per lobe (M. insularis, M. maynei, M. parva).
Based on these characters the genus appears to divide into two discrete genera, but M. otamatuakeke has no lobes on male gnathopod 1 and apical robust setae on the telson like the M. hurleyi group and the outer ramus of uropod 1 without robust setae like the M. insularis group.  [details]
