Taxonomy Huber (2010: 640) proposed to reinstate the name Limatula nivea (Brocchi, 1814) for the species generally known as Limatula gwyni (Sykes, 1903), on the grounds that "Stuardo (1968) could not detect differences between recent and fossil specimens". However it must be taken into account that Ostrea nivea Brocchi, 1814 is based on a recent shell from the Adriatic described by Renieri (1804; unavailable following ICZN ruling) as well as on a fossil specimen, and therefore encompasses as well (until restricted by lectotype or neotype designation) the Recent species currently known as Limatula subauriculata (Montagu, 1808). The name has been used for the latter species by Risso (1826) and Philippi (1836) who are here followed. [details]
