Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorAuthority The context shows Blainville clearly was using Hesione splendida in Savigny (already published by Lamarck) as the basis for the Nereis splendida new combination and he was not authoring a new species. Sherborn in Index animalium correctly only lists the Nereis splendida of Grube as an original name. Blainville did repeat the N. splendida name for his Nereis clava entry. See comments on Nereis clava and see the entry "Nereis splendida [auct. attributed to Blainville, 1825]. [details]

Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorHomonymy The combination Nereis splendida (Lamarck, 1818) (widely incorrectly cited as authored by Blainville) is senior to Nereis splendida Grube, 1840. As this is a disused name and a secondary (not primary) homonym, and as the two taxa are not considered congeneric, the junior name is not rejected (ICZN article 59.2) [details]

Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorNew combination Blainville (1825, vol. 34) recombines Hesione splendida of Savigny p.40 to Nereis splendida, but later (1828, vol.57) reverts it to the original Hesione  [details]
